Marian Ellis Chance, 90, of Ames died January 01, 2017 at Accura of Ames.

A gathering of friends and relatives will be Saturday, January 7 at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way in Ames, from 1 to 2 p.m. with a Celebration of Life at 2 p.m.

Marian was born November 27, 1926 in Union, Iowa. Marian's parents were Henry Bradley and Lois Dickenson. Marian graduated from Union High School. She worked for 25 years at the Ames Stationary Store. In 1968 she married Marion Chance. After his passing she would regularly take in foster children. She had a very caring way about her, helping everyone she could. Marian loved to be social. Her sisters and friends would regularly have scrabble nights at Ballard Creek in Huxley, always ending a night of scrabble with a bowl of chicken noodle soup. Around the holidays Marian was known as the "happy hooker", always hanging up all of the ornaments onto the Christmas tree.

Marian is survived by her daughter Lois "Beth" and Bob Swanson of Ames; her siblings, Carol Lyons, Nancy Heckle, John Bradley, Janet Helmich, Leslie Utter, and Loren Bradley; grandchildren, Melanie Silverthron and Jay Swanson; great-grandchildren, Nicole Deal; great-great grandchildren, Aryen, Olivia, and Keegan; and many foster children. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Herbert Bradley.

The family requests that donations be made to Child Find of America, childfindofamerica.org.

What can I say about Marian? Many residents come and go into our lives, but there are a few that touch you so much that they leave an ever-lasting imprint on your heart. Marian was one of those. She was kind, she was gentle, she was honest. You could count on her for a listening ear, a laugh, a lesson. Marian was a woman that I would have loved to have had as a mom, forever friend, neighbor. There are few that let their light' shine like Marian did. She was a woman of honor, of substanence. She cared, she helped, she encouraged. I will truly miss this wonderful woman and I will forever have her in my heart and be grateful that I was lucky enough to have known her.

I am so sorry for your loss, Beth and the rest of Marian's family. I had not spoken with your mother for many years, thought so much of her; what a wonderful woman. She came into our lives when she married my former high school math teacher. He was special in my life, and she made him so happy. Our heartfelt condolences. God bless.
