Joan M. Helland, age 75, of Slater died Sunday, July 24, at Madrid Home. There will be a gathering of friends and family beginning at Noon on Saturday, July 30, at her home, 107 Main Street, Slater, Iowa.
Joan Marie Helland was born June 1, 1941 to Clair and Beatrice Purvis in Ames. She graduated from Gilbert High School. Joan married Paul Helland on June 5, 1960. Besides being a homemaker, she was employed as a cook at Ballard Community Schools and was a member of the Slater Historical Society.
Joan is survived by her husband, Paul; children Ed (Kim) Helland, Kathy (Randy) Weatherman, Debby (Todd) Kennedy, Steve (Cathy Landis) Helland; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; mother, Beatrice Markley; three sisters, Phyllis Webb, Susan Roe, Jeanne Bohning, and brothers, Jon Purvis and Charlie Markley.
She was preceded in death by her father, Clair, and step-father, Cliff Markley; two sisters, Janet Purvis, and Virginia Janssen.
