Joan B. Jelden, 85, passed away April 5, 2015 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa. A gathering of friends and family will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way in Ames. A celebration of life funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 9, 2015 at Calvary United Methodist, 1403 24th Street in Ames.
Joan was born November 23, 1929, in Nevada, Iowa the daughter of Orville and Julia (Sorem) Corbin. She attended school in Ames. Joan met Hugo Jelden in 1952 while working at Lange's Lunch. They later married on June 20, 1953, making their home in Ames, Iowa. Hugo and Joan were married 60 years, 10 months, and 30 days. Joan was known as a caregiver her whole life. She had a servant attitude; volunteering for over 50 years to 20 different organizations around the Ames area.
Joan is preceded in death by her parents, infant son; Ernie, brothers; Gene Corbin and DeWayne Corbin, sister; Darlene Brekke, and her husband, Hugo.
Joan is survived by her children; son, Ken Cantonwine of Ames, Iowa; son, Curt Cantonwine of Costa Mesa, CA; daughter, Toni Abbe of Des Moines, IA and a daughter, Jana Sandholm (Leonard) of Stanton, IA; 7 grandchildren; April Heintz (Mark) of Nevada, IA; Shawn Cantonwine of Orange, CA; Patricia Cantonwine of Ames, IA; Jason Cantonwine of Ames, IA; Matthew Cantonwine of Corona, CA; Kelly Maynes (Pat) of Red Oak, IA; Brett Sandholm (Sumer) of Red Oak, IA; 9 great-grandchildren; twin sister, Joyce Swanson of Nevada, IA; brother, Virgil Corbin of Winterset, IA as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Emergency Residence Project in Ames or Israel Family Hospice House.
