Carol Ruth Attix (Vath), age 80, passed away April 2, 2015 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa. A celebration of life memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. April 7, 2015 at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way in Ames.

Carol was born August 16, 1934 to William and Elsie (Werner) Vath, at home in Buffalo Lake, Minnesota. After graduating high school, she married and started her family in Topeka, Kansas. She later moved to the San Francisco area where she lived until 1974; watching the waves crash onto the rocks of Linda Mar beach was one of her semi-secret pleasures. In 1992 Carol moved to Ames, Iowa where she shared a home with her daughter, Debbie.

Carol was surrounded by the love of family and friends and the compassionate care of hospice; she passed peacefully in her sleep, as she wished. She was not afraid of death and is now with her Lord and Savior. Carol's abiding faith in Jesus shaped her life~ she embodied the love, acceptance and forgiveness that she learned in church and taught by example to all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Carol's love of people was renowned. Those close to her were equally aware of her love of baseball; for decades she could tell you who was playing well for most any team and for her beloved St. Louis Cardinals, you might catch her yelling at the TV in consternation or celebration, based on the play or the score.

Carol is survived by her treasured children: David Bahr, Eureka CA; Debbie Bahr, Ames IA; Julie Assata (Sue), Elgin TX; beloved grandchildren: Karen Person (Coral); Jessica (Bryan) Assata; Matt Bahr; cherished great-children: HartLee, Nathan and Neo Assata; Abraham Person. She is also survived by her dear remaining sibling, Ruby Milbrett of Buffalo Lake, MN, and her two sister-in-laws Pearl and Arlene Vath. Carol has been a loving mother figure for many over her lifetime~ from the pre-adoptive newborns she cared for while her children were young, through the countless nieces, nephews and friends of her children who benefited from her large and loving heart, to the dearly loved friends who came to know and love her during her years living in Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the shelter of your choice ~ Carol's concern for others extended to those in need of protection, healing and care, whether human or animal.

CandleI'm proud to say that my grandma was one of the sweetest and most accepting people you could ever meet. I'm thankful that I was able to see her shortly before her final journey. I wish that I could be with our family today. Heaven has gained another angel. I love you, Grandma.
